How To Earn A Living Blogging

I suppose first you need an audience. An audience *much* larger than who is drawn to this site. I think my hits would go up if I reverted to an older format - less chat about my life, more pop cultural posts. At any rate, once you have an audience you then get ads from Blogads. According to the 10/18 edition of AdAge, Markos Moulitsas Zuniga makes $13,250 A WEEK from his ads. Joshua Micah Marshall makes $10,000 a week, Duncan Black makes $6,000 a week, Andrew Sullivan makes $5,600 a week, and Ana Marie Cox / Gawker Media make $4,000 a week on their Blogads ads. Despite the fact that men lead the pack in ad revenue (and in fact, Gawker Media is owned by a man, so all this top money goes to men), the Tina Fey-esqe Wonkette logo teased the article on AdAge's front page.

Which brings me to AdSense. I don't think it pays as much as Blogads since it pays by click-throughs, not simply placement on your blog. And its run by Google not the random folks at Blogads. Nevertheless, you probably noticed that there's ads on the right of this page (and on the right of my news page). I've thought of printing up business cards with my URLs on them just to see if I passed them out at bars if I could get more traffic to my sites. I dunno. Just a thought.
